Chasing a designer dream in Japan
PROFILE
After graduating from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, Jane moved to Japan and started working as a designer in a Japanese IT company. She was in charge of graphic design, web design and smartphone game application design. Jane joined Raksul in July 2018 and worked on the online design tool of Raksul’s printing service, in-charge of UI design of a newly launched product. She has now expanded her responsibilities to covering all designs for another new service within the printing business.

Moving to Japan

The first time I came to Japan was as an exchange student with a local university. During that period, I discovered new things and learnt new perspectives every day - I felt like an explorer. That excitement is something I had not experienced while living in Thailand. So after graduation from university, I decided to come back to Japan, to learn more about this amazing country and to continue the journey of discovering new things.

For my first job in Japan, I worked at a Japanese company that had branches in Tokyo and Bangkok. This was my first experience working at a Japanese company, so I learned so many things. I was responsible for working on different projects like websites, applications, social games, and DTP. Even though I was able to speak Japanese at that time, I still struggled a little with both cooperation and culture because each team had their own unique way of doing things.

Making a career change for culture and diversity

I decided to join Raksul for a few reasons.

1) Respect for cultural diversity
On the first day, I came to the office and I saw both Japanese and foreigners working alongside each other. I was so impressed. Being culturally responsive is about honoring the difference of others. Raksul demonstrates this every day through the company’s culture and environment.

2) Career opportunities
I just love how Raksul believes in systemization and the power of technology. I am also interested in technology services that really solve problems and make people's lives easier. Everything seems to fit well with my way of thinking so I decided to join Raksul. It is a great opportunity to become a part of the team which believes in the same things.

3) Work-life balance
I appreciated the company’s vision about work-life balance. Raksul provides a flexitime system, which makes working really easy. I really like that everyone at the company is able to work at their own pace.

The joy of designing with users’ needs in mind

I really enjoyed learning new things not only about design but also how to provide better customer service and really meet the needs of the client, especially when dealing with high-level technical context. Through this position, I got better and better at doing research and learning to understand what people what from their designs. As with all things, I would occasionally hit a brick wall, but being able to get over the wall was always an amazing feeling.。

The most rewarding experience

I have always appreciated when my designs are used in real products. If they are helping people solve problems, whether they be big or small, it makes me feel really successful as a designer. Also, I love the moments when team members ask me about design. Through these discussions, my team and I have learned new things from each other and further developed our skills.

Giving back to hometown

I plan to go back to Thailand and start a new career in Bangkok before I’m 40. While working at a new company, I aim to become a part-time teacher at the charity, where I went before I was a university student. I would like to share my experience with my future students and educate them about self-development and problem-solving.
